Breathing Lessons: A New Sermon Series

May 6, 2011

God’s breath in man returning to his birth.

– the english poet George Herbert

On Easter morning, Mary Magdalene discovered that Jesus was alive again; he was continuing his work of sharing God’s goodness with the world, beginning with his broken disciples.  That evening, gathered in a fear-filled room, his disciples received a visit from the risen Christ.  With a word of peace, he breathed on them, filling them with the divine spirit, so that they too could live again and be his witnesses.

During the Easter season, from now until Pentecost (June12), I will be preaching a sermon series called “Breathing Lessons.”  In biblical terms, to breathe is to live, and spirituality is the art of breathing well.  Each week we will focus on a different aspect of breath – the peace of being attentive to our body’s natural rhythms, the grace of listening, the gift of speaking, the cleansing breath of fresh air, and the trained breathing of the athlete.  On Pentecost, we will celebrate the arrival of the divine breath which breathes in us.

In the meantime, I can’t get this song (“Breathe”) by Pink Floyd out of my mind. (I welcome comments and suggestions for more songs, music, art about breathing).

Relax, take a deep breath, and enjoy.

Pastor Jeff
