thought is easy, speech is laborious

May 18, 2011

The sermon on Sunday (Breathing Lesson #3) will be about how we find the words appropriate to speak about God and to tell a story of our faith.

In the Bible, Moses, who is slow of speech, speaks through Aaron. In his unfinished opera, Moses and Aaron, Arnold Schoenberg places the following line in the mouth of Moses: “thought is easy, speech is laborious.” The implication is that Moses impediment is not physical, but that ‘finding the words’ is really hard work.

But, (and I say this, punning on the Epistle of James, to provoke serious thought and conversation), “faith without words is dead.”

What do you think?
