Sabbath Day – Big (Scarey) News

August 31, 2012

This past week has been a vacation/dissertation writing week. Apart from the reading and writing (which was excessive), the week also involved climbing and bouldering, good food and good ale, with music accomanying all the way.

Yesterday was about visiting Long Island. I stopped by a few haunts and saw a few friends, but mostly visited with my advisor. The big news of the day: the time clock is now ticking – I’ve got nine months to complete and defend.

Lord have mercy.

I now know what I am doing with every waking moment when I am not either working or with my family – and those will be stressed. My Introduction, section three, is called “A Population Under Stress.” I relate.

Any advice?

    Make a reverse calendar.
    Keep breathing.
Put the dissertation first in your mind and daily schedule.
Be aware that everything will take at least 3 times as long as you think it will.
    Keep breathing.
Cut back on as many other obligations as you possibly can during this final push. You can pick up the tasks post diss.
Assure everyone that “Dr. Jeff” will be much more fun than “Dissertating Jeff” and the sooner you’re able to make that transition the better for your part of the universe.
    Keep breathing.
Stay healthy – exercise – take breaks and then get back to it.
Picture the graduation ceremony. The hooding ceremony is WAY COOL.
Ask Noelle and August to start planning a graduation party.
Think up a graduation reward for the whole family.
    Keeping breathing.

Ah, the sheer terror of getting that hard deadline…. keeping you in my prayers!
